HAUS EIGNER I, NEUNKIRCHEN, 1969

GÜNTHER DOMENIG

The Eigner House in Neunkirchen is a very early building by Günther Domenig, built parallel to the Pädagogische Akademie in Graz-Eggenberg and therefore characterized by the same architectural language. While the street side appears restrained, the house develops its full impact towards the garden side. Loadbearing exposed concrete elements alternate with large window openings. This is an attempt to borrow from the international movement of brutalism, marked by honesty in the use of raw concrete and its sculptural effect, but above all to be seen as a reaction to the caesura in architectural development caused by the Nazi era. However, the building itself was never used as a home, but instead served as a disco for many years, which is why there have been significant changes in the spatial structure.
